Teams ready to take on 21-mile challenge
TEAMS are lining up to put their best feet forward in this autumn's big annual Five Valleys Walk.

Among them the office bound employees of chartered accountants Randall and Payne will be out in the fresh air for the 25th anniversary, 21 mile hike in aid of the Meningitis Trust.

Randall and Payne have also sponsored one of the nine checkpoints around the circular uphill and down dale route of the major fund raiser on Sunday September 25. The company's managing partner Mike Anthony said his staff were delighted to join in. "We were only too happy to take part in the event, particularly as the trust this year's celebrates 25 years of supporting people after meningitis,"

Mr Anthony said. "Here's to a great day," he added. Registration for the sponsored walk is now open. It is split into nine manageable sections. "You can walk as much or as little as your feet can handle," trust spokeswoman Becky Jones said. "Dogs are also welcome too for the whole route."

People, as individuals or teams, can start or end their walk at any of the nine checkpoints. They are detailed on the registration form and will be open 8.30am-5.30pm. "You can choose to tackle the whole route, or pick a distance to suit and use the free Stagecoach bus service to travel back to their starting point," Becky said. "Why not do a sweepstake and get friends, family and work colleagues to guess how long it will take you?," she added. Water will be provided at each checkpoint, courtesy of Angel Springs and refreshments will available to buy. One section is especially suitable for pushchairs, between Wycliffe and Nailsworth and if walkers register before September 19 will cost £7 for an adult (or £10 on the day), £5 for under 16s (or £8 on the day) and £20 for a family (or £25 on the day). The Meningitis Trust started in 1986 after an outbreak of the illness in the Stroud valleys. Since then it has provided the widest range of free services and community-based support for people affected by meningitis across the UK.

The trust also raises awareness of the disease and funds research into its long-term impact. Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It can strike quickly and kill within hours, and its impact can last a lifetime. Each year in the UK there are about 2,500 cases of bacterial meningitis and an estimated 5,000 cases of viral. Up to 500,000 people in the UK have had meningitis.

Those most at risk are children under five, young people aged 15-25 and adults over 55.
