Important information about changes to paying HMRC

If you currently use the Transcash service at the Post Office to pay HMRC you need to be aware that this service is being withdrawn from 15 December and you will need to find a different method of payment.

HMRC are encouraging payment using one of the following ways:

  1. Online or telephone banking – from your bank account by Bacs, Chaps or Faster Payments. Ensure your 13 digit Accounts Office Reference Number is quoted as the payment reference when making the payment.  You can find this on the letter HMRC sent you when you first registered as an employer.

  2. Debit & credit card payments online – payment can be made via the .GOV website https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/pay-online/epaye using a debit or company credit card.  From 13 January 2018 HMRC will no longer accept payment by personal credit card. There’s a fee if you pay by credit card which is not refundable.
  3. Direct Debit – set up a Direct Debit through your business’s HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) online account to make a single payment. This means you’ll need to set up a payment each time you pay HMRC through Direct Debit.   You’ll need your 13-character accounts office reference number to make a payment. Allow 5 working days to process a Direct Debit the first time you set one up. It should take 3 working days the next time if you’re using the same bank details. Make sure you also enter the correct year and month the payment is for in the separate boxes provided. The payments will show on your bank statement as ‘HMRC NDDS’.
  4. At your bank or building society – cheques should be made payable to ‘HM Revenue and Customs only’ followed by your 13-character accounts office reference number.  You’ll need to pay in using the payslip for the correct period from your HMRC payment booklet.
  5. By cheque through the post – you can send a cheque by post to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) along with the corresponding payment slip from your PAYE booklet addressed to: HMRC, Direct, BX5 5BD (a street name, city name or PO box is not required with this address.

Make sure you pay HMRC by the deadline. You may have to pay interest and penalties if your payment is late.

Your PAYE bill must be paid to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) by:

  • 22nd of the next tax month if you pay monthly
  • 22nd after the end of the quarter if you pay quarterly (for example, 22 July for the 6 April to 5 July quarter)
  • 19th of the month if you pay by cheque through the post
