Spotlight on Corporate Social Responsibility

One of the most important things a business can recognise is that it has an impact on the community it serves.

And it’s up to the firm’s management and beyond to ensure this impact is positive.

The Gloucestershire Business Awards dedicates an entire category to the promotion of responsible businesses who are using their powers for good.

The Corporate Social Responsibility Award was last year won by Clarkson Evans, who were nominated by Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity.

The company raised money to improve life for cancer patients receiving treatment at the hospitals, here’s what they did:

Clarkson Evans – Winner of Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2018

Key business points:

  • Leading electrical contractors in the UK
  • Started life as a family business in the eighties when Steve Evans, now Chairman, began trading as ‘S P Evans electrical Contractor’ using his spare bedroom as an office
  • Employ 850+ staff wiring new homes across England and Wales
  • Based in Staverton

The winning entry:

Clarkson Evans were nominated by Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity for their original approach and willingness to get behind all aspects of their work. Both parties were keen to rewrite the rules for corporate partnerships to create a relationship in which skills, knowledge and resources are shared.

The partnership has made a significant impact in less than three years. Clarkson Evans are not only raising vital funds to provide extra care and equipment for local cancer patients, but are also using their skills and knowledge to make a difference.

Clarkson Evans have raised over £9,000 to provide Sky Ceilings which have transformed the environment across treatment rooms in the Cancer Centre, replacing plain ceiling tiles with a relaxing back lit summer sky scene in a room which by necessity can have no natural light. This has been greatly appreciated by the patients.

Fundraising initiatives have included replacing disposable plastic cups in favour of re-usable cups and flasks for staff, through which Clarkson Evans were able to donate £1,000 of saved spend. This was part of their environmental commitment to reducing unnecessary plastic waste.

Clarkson Evans have also shared their insight presenting alongside the hospital charities at a national conference to advise charities how best to work with corporate partners, a session which was incredibly well received by the 300+ guests.
