Spotlight on Rural Business

The award-winning rural Gloucestershire business turning milk into magic

Ahead of our celebration evening for the award winners of last year’s Gloucestershire Business Awards we continue to reveal what each business did to attract the attention of the judges.

Cotteswold Dairy has been in the industry for more than 80 years and has seen three generations of the Workman family at it’s helm. We celebrate the success of our much-loved local milk producer.

Cotteswold Dairy – Winner of Rural Business of the Year 2018

Key business points:

  • Founder Harry Workman purchased a 30-gallon milk round in 1938 which is now one of the largest independent dairies in the UK
  • Depots in Cheltenham, North Wales and Shrewsbury, and main processing site in Tewkesbury
  • Employs 360 staff producing high quality milk and cream products delivered efficiently and reliably to a loyal customer base
  • The dairy processes around 250,000 litres of milk every day

The winning entry:

The current Chairman Roger (Harry’s eldest son) and Managing Director George (Roger’s son) together with other family members, work closely in dedicating themselves to growing the business further. The hard work of the Workman family and their loyal workforce has paid off as the business continues to grow year after year.

The fleet of old-school milk floats still do their rounds each morning. In fact, doorstep delivery has seen a resurgence as a result of the drive for us all to use less plastic. Today 100,000 pints of milk produced by Cotteswold Dairy each day goes into reusable glass bottles.

Long-term partnerships have been forged and maintained with the local farmers from which the raw milk is sourced. The family and staff all work together to provide the best for their suppliers and customers. As they remain in a competitive market, they produce and supply products that really represent what Cotteswold Dairy stands for and continue to adhere to their founder’s core values ‘Quality, Service and Cleanliness’.
