Apprenticeship Week: Our apprentices share their work-based learning experiences

As part of Apprenticeship Week, 10-16 February, we share experiences from some of our valued apprentices; two of which have been with Randall & Payne for numerous years, having chosen to further their studies, and two of our most recent apprentices who joined us last summer (see photograph above).

James Cook, Corporate Finance & Strategy Executive

“I started my apprenticeship in the accounts team straight after sixth form in 2019, completing my AAT qualification in 2022 (Level 3 & 4).
While gaining experience in accounting, I was keen to get involved in advisory work and began supporting one of the partners on special projects.

Early on, I learned that a strong foundation in accounting—at least Level 4—was essential for a role in Corporate Finance. After starting my ACA training in 2022 (due to finish in July 2025), an opportunity opened up in the Corporate Finance team, and I was able to make the move in October 2023.

Since then, I’ve progressed from assisting with valuations and data collection, to carrying out in-depth company analysis, and working directly with clients. I particularly enjoy sale mandates, meeting business owners, and understanding their companies in detail. No two projects are the same, which keeps the role exciting and dynamic. My technical skills, especially with spreadsheets, have also been a huge advantage.

For anyone starting out, I’d say be proactive—look for opportunities to learn beyond your role, build strong fundamentals, and don’t be afraid to put yourself forward for new challenges.”

Joe Lock, Corporate Tax Accountant

“Throughout school, I was never certain on what career I wanted to pursue, and following my A-Levels I spent a couple of years working in a completely different field. The appeal of gaining formal qualifications alongside being paid a salary helped me make the decision to give accountancy a try five years ago.

As an apprentice, the combination of study and training days alongside learning from on-the-job experience was a useful mix which enabled me to complete my level 4 apprenticeship and become ATT qualified, as well as start to take on some more responsibility at work.
Although it meant taking more exams, I was keen to progress in tax and decided to make a start on a level 7 apprenticeship where I could become a Chartered Tax Advisor. Just over three years after starting at Randall & Payne, I managed to complete my CTA exams and am in a strong position to further advance in my career.

I now enjoy my role as a Corporate Tax Accountant as I have the chance to work with colleagues and clients on a wide variety of different jobs. Diverse opportunities, hybrid working and career growth are all reasons I am happy that I choose to give a career in tax a try.”

Hal Jamieson, Accounts Trainee

“I was fortunate to do my work experience with Randall & Payne and was aware they offer apprenticeships post A ‘Levels, so I kept in touch. I had an interview whilst I was at sixth form and joined after completing my A’ Levels last year. I am working in the accounts team whilst I am studying for my Level 3 AAT.

This apprenticeship has allowed me to expand my skills beyond the classroom, offering invaluable workplace experience and strengthening the connection between academic study and professional practice. It has enhanced my value to the team and helped me develop essential skills that university alone could not provide, positioning me for a successful future.”

For anyone still in study, stay up to date, keep asking questions, email firms and ask about apprenticeships and positions.”

Jorja Stallard, Accounts Trainee

“My school Careers adviser suggested an accountancy apprenticeship would suit me based on my academic interests and achievements. I researched local accountants and met representatives from Randall & Payne during a careers fair at Bournside School whilst I was doing my GCSEs.

I contacted Randall & Payne directly towards the end of my A ‘Levels and made regular contact, sending an updated CV having received my A ‘Level results. I finally got the opportunity to be interviewed, and I found myself starting within two weeks!

I started in the tax team helping with tax returns and registering clients for self-assessment and I enjoy helping out on reception when required too. I have recently moved over to the accounts team, and I am about to start my training which involves going to White Horse Training in Bath alongside other apprentices from other firms.

My advice would be to make the most of all the resources readily available at school, such as the careers team and careers fairs, ask lots of questions and be persistent!”
